Finding the right therapist is about more than credentials or treatment approaches. It’s about finding someone who can see beyond the immediate symptoms and help you understand the experiences, relationships, beliefs, and patterns that may be shaping how you feel today.
I’m Laura Smalt, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in women’s mental health, trauma, anxiety, relationships, self-worth, and the complex experiences that shape who we become.
Many of the women I work with are capable, resilient, and accustomed to handling a great deal. Yet underneath that strength may be anxiety, exhaustion, perfectionism, self-doubt, complicated relationships, difficulty setting boundaries, or the feeling that somewhere along the way, they lost touch with themselves.
Therapy creates space to understand not only what you are experiencing, but why.

My Approach
I believe our present struggles often make more sense when we understand what shaped them.
The ways we think, relate, cope, protect ourselves, and even view our own worth can develop through family-of-origin experiences, attachment relationships, trauma, loss, expectations, and the roles we learned to occupy. Patterns that once helped us feel safe, accepted, needed, or in control can eventually become the very patterns that leave us feeling overwhelmed or disconnected from ourselves.
My approach is integrative, trauma-informed, and grounded in evidence-based practice. I draw from cognitive, attachment-based, family-systems, narrative, and brain- and nervous-system-informed perspectives to understand the whole person rather than treating symptoms in isolation.
Together, we can identify patterns, challenge beliefs that no longer serve you, develop practical skills, strengthen boundaries and self-worth, and create meaningful change that reaches beyond the therapy room.
The goal is not to become someone different. It is to understand yourself deeply enough to live more intentionally as yourself.
What You Can Expect
Therapy with me is compassionate and collaborative, but it is also purposeful. We can make room for what you are feeling while remaining curious about where it comes from, what keeps it going, and what needs to change.
You won’t be reduced to a diagnosis or expected to fit into a single therapeutic approach. Our work is individualized to you, your history, your relationships, your strengths, your goals, and the life you want to create.
Healing is not about erasing your past. It is about reaching a place where your past no longer gets to define your future.
Let’s get to Know One Another
The relationship between therapist and client is one of the strongest predictors of successful therapy. Finding someone who feels like the right fit matters. If my approach resonates with you, I’d be honored to be part of your journey.
